How to wash a bike without killing the seals
A bike is not a small car. Paint on a car is a sealed skin. A bike is an open frame with bearings at both ends and a chain that lives on grit. Fan on the frame. Keep the jet out of hubs and any e-bike electrics.
- Frame, fork legs, rims: wide fan, 30 cm or more. Keep moving.
- Tyres: fan, further back. Do not pencil a sidewall.
- Saddle, bar tape, stickers: shower or the lowest step, or a bucket and a brush.
- Drivetrain, headset, hubs, bottom bracket, pivots: no jet. Brush and degreaser.
- E-bike battery, motor, display, charge port: cover them. Then stay away. Never a rotary tip.
A dirt blaster is a spinning pencil jet. Fine on a dirty slab. Wrong on a cassette, a chain, a jockey wheel, a disc rotor and any seal. It drives grit in and strips grease out. If the box has one, it stays on the hook when the bike is out. Soap is a low-pressure job. Bike wash or a mild car shampoo, then a fan rinse. Do not use patio detergent on a painted frame.
